God's Wrath

Claim: Pat Robertson said that Hurricane Katrina was caused by God's anger over the selection of lesbian comedienne Ellen Degeneres to host the upcoming Emmy Awards.

Status: False.

Origins: Good satire neatly straddles the divide between the believable and the incredible, and the Dateline Hollywood article quoted above achieved that balance so well that many readers mistook it for a straight news article. This acceptance was due in large part to U.S. evangelist Pat Robertson's history of making rather outrageous public statements on his 700 Club television program, including his recent call for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo
Chavez.

The satirical premise expressed in the original piece, that Mr. Robertson might make a connection between homosexuality and hurricanes, doesn't even require stretching the truth. During a 6 August 1998 broadcast of The 700 Club, Mr. Robertson addressed comments at participants of the Orlando, Florida, Gay Pride Festival, stating: "I would warn Orlando that you're right in the way of some serious hurricanes, and I don't think I'd be waving those flags in God's face if I were you."

Those not quite convinced that the Dateline Hollywood article really was intended as satire are invited to read that web publication's explanation of their history, starting with their founding in 360 BC as Gladiators Weekly.

---> In case you didn't see the original story...it's convincing and ironically funny;
Dateline: Hollywood >>> PAT ROBERTSON BLAMES HURRICANE ON CHOICE OF ELLEN DEGENERES TO HOST EMMYS

Lesbian is New Orleans native

Hollywood – Pat Robertson on Sunday said that Hurricane Katrina was God’s way of expressing its anger at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for its selection of Ellen Degeneres to host this year’s Emmy Awards. “By choosing an avowed lesbian for this national event, these Hollywood elites have clearly invited God’s wrath,” Robertson said on “The 700 Club” on Sunday. “Is it any surprise that the Almighty chose to strike at Miss Degeneres’ hometown?”

Robertson also noted that the last time Degeneres hosted the Emmys, in 2001, the September 11 terrorism attacks took place shortly before the ceremony.

“This is the second time in a row that God has invoked a disaster shortly before lesbian Ellen Degeneres hosted the Emmy Awards,” Robertson explained to his approximately one million viewers. “America is waiting for her to apologize for the death and destruction that her sexual deviance has brought onto this great nation.”

Robertson added that other tragedies of the past several years can be linked to Degeneres’ growing national prominence. September, 2003, for example, is both the month that her talk show debuted and when insurgents first gained a foothold in Iraq following the successful March invasion. “Now we know why things took a turn for the worse,” he explained.

In order to avoid further tragedy, Robertson called not only for the Television Academy to find a new heterosexual host, but to bar all homosexuals and bisexuals from taking part in the ceremony.

He said employees at the Christian Broadcasting Network had put together a list of 283 nominees, presenters, and invited guests at the Emmys known to be of sexually deviant persuasions.

“God already allows one awards show to promote the homosexual agenda,” Robertson declared. “But clearly He will not tolerate such sinful behavior to spread beyond the Tonys.”

--->The wrap-up;
"Just like what Nazi Germany did to the Jews, so liberal America is now doing to the evangelical Christians. It's no different. It is the same thing. It is happening all over again. It is the Democratic Congress, the liberal-based media and the homosexuals who want to destroy the Christians. Wholesale abuse and discrimination and the worst bigotry directed toward any group in America today. More terrible than anything suffered by any minority in history."--Pat Robertson, 1993 interview with Molly Ivins

More quotes; http://www.curevents.com/vb/archive/index.php/t-18793.html

[dh] Now correct me please if I'm mistaken, but he seems to be comparing "liberal america" to Nazis...not to mention his minimization of the history of many of the peoples of the US.

"It is interesting, that termites don't build things, and the great builders of our nation almost to a man have been Christians, because Christians have the desire to build something. He is motivated by love of man and God, so he builds. The people who have come into (our) institutions (today) are primarily termites. They are into destroying institutions that have been built by Christians, whether it is universities, governments, our own traditions, that we have.... The termites are in charge now, and that is not the way it ought to be, and the time has arrived for a godly fumigation."--Pat Robertson, New York Magazine, August 18, 1986

"...the time has arrived for a godly fumigation."

[dh]If this had been said by a Muslim, people everywhere would be demanding that the person and the statements be repudiated. So at the end of the day, it matters not what he's said now. The question should be; why has he been given a free pass to say such things for so long?

It seems to be common, this whole "God did it to punish someone" thing:

Original Haaretz article:
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/622278.html

>>Associated Press via Haaretz | Sept. 9, 2005

Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, a former chief rabbi and the spiritual leader of the
ultra-Orthodox Shas movement, said on Wednesday (Sept. 7, 2005) that
Hurricane Katrina was God's punishment for U.S. President George W.
Bush's support for Israel's Gaza pullout.

"It was God's retribution. God does not shortchange anyone," Yosef said
during his weekly sermon on Tuesday. His comments were broadcast on
(Israeli) Channel 10 TV on Wednesday.

Yosef also said recent natural disasters were the result of a lack of
Torah (Talmud) study and that Katrina's victims suffered "because they
have no God," singling out black people.

"He (Bush) perpetrated the expulsion (of Jews from Gaza). Now everyone
is mad at him. This is his punishment for what he did to Gush Katif, and
everyone else who did as he told them, their time will come, too," Yosef
said.

A Shas official, Tzvika Yaacobson, did not deny Yosef made the comments
but said they were taken out of context and that people were
misinterpreting the rabbi.

"He has a special style he uses when he speaks to the people," said
Yaacobson. "He tells jokes that you may like, and may not like. When you
just tell the joke, you are ignoring the connotation."

Yosef singled out black victims, saying "they don't study Torah." He
used the word "Kushim," which in the Bible refers to an ancient African
people but in vernacular Hebrew is considered derogatory.

Yosef, 85, is no stranger to controversy. Last March he declared that
God will strike dead "the evil one" who evacuates Israelis from the Gaza
Strip, referring to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

He has called on the Israel Defense Forces to "joyfully" annihilate
Arabs with rockets, and he caused a huge uproar when he stated that the
six million Jews who perished in the Nazi Holocaust died because they
were reincarnations of sinners in previous generations.<<
